Assigned Area Tasks

Assigned Area Tasks can be a lot of fun and provide a flexible and creative way to race against your fellow pilots

However they can also be quite intimidating to understand

This presentation attempts to explain what they are and how to prepare for, then fly them

AAT Contents: Click to Download

Firstly we look at what AATs are, why they were created and how they work

Then, a side-bar on how UK scoring works in a Regional
NB, this is specific to Regional rules though the same principles apply to Nationals and in large manner, Internationals

Having gone through the gobbledgook, we can then focus on what that means in the cockpit during  a flight!

Then, lets look at how to prepare the instruments, set up an AAT and what to focus on during the flight

Finally, some examples of real flights and how AAT worked to give a good, or at least interesting competition day

Setting Up the Instruments

Showing the Estimated Time Error

Show Estimated Time Error

This setting will show a Nav Box on SeeYou that displays the time Over or Under your Task Duration, based on task duration, time since the start, speed so far and distance to go.

Setting Up Estimated Time Error

Find Estimated Time Error setting in SeeYou Mobile

On SeeYou Mobile, you can fid this in the Altitued Settings page

My choice of ETE Setting

I use this setting, which estimates your arrival time based on average speed and some adjustment by changing McCreedy setting

Just remember, when you are near final glide, turn the McCreedy setting to what you expect to use on final glid

That will alter the ETE based on higher final glide average speed

And remember to check the Use Altitude Difference!

Setting a Turn Point

Setting a TP as an AAT Area

Once you have set up a task as usual, as if for a Speed task, you can then turn each TP into an Area:

Clear the box for Auto Next (so you don't automatically change navigation immediately you enter the area)

Check the box saying this is an Assigned Area

Use the briefing sheets to set the areas and angles

And finally, move your TP to where you guess might be the best position to turn

Now Go Racing!

Use the navigation point as guidance only!

Follow the weather and turn where the weather is best, later if improving, shorter if not so good

Minimise bother with the instruments by turning when it is right, then tapping for the next TP!

Dont worry about Delta Time till you are at least half way round!

A bit more time on task is better than coming home early!

Enjoy the flexibility!
